DESCRIPTION:2-day course Day 1: Sunday 31st May. Day 2: Sunday 7th June \n\n\n\n\n\nPSI the first step on the coaching ladder with Paddle UK (British Canoeing).  \n\n\n\nIt is a 2-day course with minimal pre-requisites: Participants must be a Paddle UK member\, have completed a Paddlesport Safety and Rescue Course (or FSRT) and register with Paddle UK (in addition to making a booking on this page).  \n\n\n\nThe Paddlesport Instructor qualification is designed for instructors running paddlesport taster/starter sessions within the safety management systems of clubs\, centres or other organisations in: \n\n\n\n\nVery Sheltered Water environments\n\n\n\nCraft deemed suitable for a first-time experience\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCourse Content\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe qualification will support the instructor with practical skills such as kitting up a group and getting afloat\, initial familiarisation activities\, games and activities to support learning and how to use mini journeys to inspire adventure and exploration. This will be enhanced with support on how these sessions can be delivered in a way that is enjoyable\, safe and rewarding. \n\n\n\nThe process of completing the qualification aims to help prepare candidates for their first paddlesport instructing role; ‘primed and ready’. \n\n\n\n\n\nGetting your group ready & on the water \n\n\n\n\nPreparation\, kitting up\, manual handling\n\n\n\nBankside briefings\n\n\n\nPaddling fundamentals\n\n\n\n\nSupporting beginners  \n\n\n\n\nIntroducing basic skills\n\n\n\nStrategies for helping your participants fix common errors\n\n\n\nGames with aims\n\n\n\n\nHow we learn\, how we instruct \n\n\n\n\nUnderstanding factors that promote learning\n\n\n\nTools for facilitating learning on your sessions\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJourneying & group management \n\n\n\n\nPurposeful journeys\n\n\n\nActivities to promote skills development\n\n\n\nLeadership styles\n\n\n\nUsing the environment\n\n\n\n\nAssessment \n\n\n\n\nProfessional Standards\n\n\n\nPersonal Paddling Skills\n\n\n\nRescue Skills\n\n\n\n\nDeployment matters & next steps \n\n\n\n\nRemit\n\n\n\nFurther qualifications\n\n\n\nPersonalised feedback and action planning \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAssessment Criteria \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants are required to demonstrate effective rescues from their chosen craft\, in addition to professional conduct and competence in personal paddling skills (see here a full description of the assessment guidance). The rescue assessment includes: \n\n\n\n\n\nAssisting swimmers \n\n\n\n\nTowing systems\n\n\n\nRecovering equipment\n\n\n\nSelf-rescues\n\n\n\n\nSelf-rescues \n\n\n\n\nAssisted self-rescues\n\n\n\nDeep water rescues\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVarious craft from preferred craft \n\n\n\n\nTechniques for getting swimmer out of the water\n\n\n\nMultiple rescues\n\n\n\nUnconscious / unresponsive rescues\n\n\n\nEntrapped rescues\n\n\n\n\nGroup management  \n\n\n\n\nSafety protocols\n\n\n\nCommunication\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFind out more on the British Canoeing Awarding Body website:  \n\n\n\n\nCourse overview \n\n\n\nCourse documentation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDo I meet the pre requisites? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo be accepted on this course\, participants must: \n\n\n\n\nBe current members of Paddle UK\n\n\n\nHave completed Paddlesport Safety and Rescue Course (PSRC)\n\n\n\nRegister on the Paddle UK portal\n\n\n\n\nWhile the lower age limit for this course is 14\, we are not licensed to deliver adventure training to under 18s unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCourse & certification fees\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis course is available at no cost to members of Hampton Canoe Club. Participants will just need to pay registration and an access fee (which enables us to use the lake). \n\n\n\nThe fee for all other participants includes all costs and fees except registration which is payable separately in advance to Paddle UK.  Courses are weather-dependent and may be cancelled at short notice.
