Learn to roll a kayak

Evenings by arrangement, 7-8pm (private heated pool, near Richmond)

Take your first step into the world of white water, practice your self-rescues, build your confidence or refresh your skills before that big trip.

What is this session?

I’m offering private coaching for individuals or groups of up to 4 people in a heated pool in West London.

This might be your first attempt at rolling a kayak, or an opportunity to practice your self rescues before your taking your Instructor or Leader award.

Before the session we’ll talk over the phone so I can understand your goals. For example:

  • If you are new to rolling you will need more than one session, but rolling practice is tiring, so little and often is the key. You’ll leave your first session with a firm grasp of the techniques and lots of things to practice independently next time you are on the water with a buddy.
  • If you are developing your skills on the way to a coaching qualification, I can give you a sense of your readiness for your assessment, providing some tips and advice for your development plan.
  • Perhaps you just want to build your confidence in a safe and controlled environment before an upcoming trip or after a break from paddling.
  • Maybe this is your first time using a spray deck or you are looking for a safe place to get used to your new equipment.

If you would like follow up sessions in the pool or on a nearby lake this can easily be arranged.

Personalised coaching in a private pool sounds expensive, how much will it cost?

£60.00 per session (max 4 people) includes pool hire, equipment & coaching

I live close by and enjoy coaching, so pool hire, use of my equipment and coaching is all included for just £60 for the hour. You may want a 1:1 session, or be a group of up to four people.

For groups larger than four, we’ll need to organise two consecutive hours, giving you the opportunity to watch and learn from each other.

Who’s going to keep me safe?

I’m a British Canoeing Level 3 Coach and Paddlesport Safety Tutor who coaches Canoes, Kayaks and Paddleboards.

As someone who delivers the PSRC course, I have an up to date understanding of the requirements of the PIA, PSL and Coach Award assessments.

Where is the pool?

Conveniently located on the A316 between Richmond and Twickenham. Perfect for some practice of an evening after college or work. The pool is heated to 34 degrees, providing an excellent year-round venue.

There is free parking on The Avenue and Ranelagh Drive and excellent transport links nearby. The private pool is a hidden gem a short walk up Budds Alley (see map).

Paddle Explore Award

31 May at 10:00 am 1 June at 4:00 pm

2-day certified British Canoeing qualification

Develop your independent paddling skills

What is this course?

On the Paddle Explore course you’ll be able to develop your kayak, canoe and/or paddleboard skills. We’ll focus on good planning and staying safe, and you’ll have the opportunity to try different techniques for dealing with emergencies.

Your Paddle Explore Award gives you ownership; because you choose what to focus on and where you move next in the world of paddlesport. Working with a coach you will be able to develop a programme that suits you, as a result no two Explore Awards are the same. In this award you will take ownership of your own decisions and learn to make confident choices, based on the places you paddle, wind and weather. You will learn to make confident choices. Above all you will recognise your ability to independently paddle your chosen craft in a sheltered water environment.

British Canoeing

After your course, we’ll be able to discuss next steps, and consider which discipline-specific training you might do next.

Who is it for?

This course is suited to

  • Anyone with a foundation in a paddling discipline, now wanting to get out and do more (you should have good control of your craft, holding a Paddle Discover Award or similar experience)
  • Experienced paddlers wanting to return to the discipline after a break from paddling
  • Anyone wanting to see how transferrable your paddling skills are to another craft (Paddleboard, Canoe, Kayak)

Perhaps you have invested in a boat and want to develop your skills so as to safely plan trips and days out on the water. Whatever the case, every course is tailored to the participants, so we will start by having a chat about your goals.

Course content

Whilst exploring your environment from your chosen craft your coach will explore with you the knowledge, skills and help you gain experiences that will help you become independent on the water.

This will include:

  • Getting Ready
  • At the Venue
  • On the Water
  • Safety and rescue
  • After the Session
  • Future Development

Your Coach (Andy Cockayne)

I am a British Canoeing Level 3 Coach and Safety Tutor.

With over 25 years of paddling experience in a wide range of environments, I enjoy creating a safe and caring environment in which to lead groups, and provide positive learning experiences.

I normally paddle from Hampton Canoe Club where I am a Club Coach and the Club Safety Officer. You might catch me paddling:

  • ‘K1’ racing-style boats
  • Sea Kayaks
  • White water boats
  • Stand Up Paddleboads

This is a 2-day course. We’ll start the day on the beautiful and pollution-free Wraysbury Reservoir where we’ll practice rescue and open water skills. Day 2 will be on a picturesque stretch of the Thames nearby, where we can complete a journey and develop our moving water skills.

This course is suited to people who have a decent bit of paddling experience under their belt and want to branch out. Perhaps you’ve invested in a paddleboard, canoe or a touring kayak. You’ve learned the strokes & have good control of your craft (equivalent to Paddle Explore level) and now want to build the skills needed to undertake more ambitious journeys in a Sheltered Water environment.

You’ll need to bring your own equipment as unfortunately I can’t supply boats, paddles or BAs.

(Not the) Canoe Award (5th & 6th May)

5 May, 2023 @ 9:30 am 6 May, 2023 @ 5:30 pm

Solo open canoe Peer Paddle (at your own risk) starting at HCC

About this Peer Paddle

We’ll try to cover the Canoe Award syllabus but this is not the Canoe Award. These sessions are a well organised series of Peer Paddles, organised by a club member with lots of canoeing experience. As with any other peer paddle, HCC members join at their own risk.

About me

I am a trainee Level 3 Coach, soon to be assessed. As part of my coach development I’m inviting HCC members to come along and have a go at all the techniques that are covered by the British Canoeing Canoe Award.

Pre-requisites

This is not for complete beginners, but there will be plenty of opportunity to recap the basics. It is expected that you will have some experience in an open canoe, for example you’ll have done a couple of canoe sessions at the club. It’s OK if you are new to going solo.

What we will cover

Day 1 morning (session 1)

  • Intros and structure of sessions
  • Planning a trip
  • Skills refresher: forward and backward paddling

Day 1 afternoon (session 2)

  • Skills refresher: Turning and manoeuvring
  • Dry rescues
  • Risk assessments

Day 2 morning (session 3)

  • Manual handling & transporting the boats
  • Skills for open water
  • Skills for moving water

Day 2 afternoon (session 4)

  • Hanging draws
  • Towing
  • Using lines
  • Skills recap
  • Wet rescues
  • What next

The Canoe Award and a full description of the content and syllabus is available here: https://paddlesuptraining.com/courses/canoe-award

What to bring

Please come with your usual paddling gear, a change of clothes and a packed lunch. Any wet sessions will be done at the end of the day, close to the clubhouse.

It would be helpful to have a couple of cars with roof bars for the morning session on day 2.

Risk assessment

This is not a Club activity, but the HCC umbrella risk assessment still applies. An additional risk assessment for this event is available here.
